Republicans Center On Two Big Names For Next House Speaker

Republican voters would like to see Majority Whip Steve Scalise or House Freedom Caucus Chairman Jim Jordan as the next speaker of the house if the GOP can maintain control after the midterm elections.

According to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Wednesday, 18 percent of Republican voters want Scalise to be the next leader of the House. The number comes as a surprise to many, as only 9 percent of voters said they wanted House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to be the next speaker.

The poll also showed that Jordan, who announced his campaign for speaker of the House in late July, was the second favorite among Republican voters, with 11 percent saying they would like to see the Freedom Caucus leader as the next speaker.

Among Democrats, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was the preferred candidate for speaker if Democrats are able to win back the House in November, with 32 percent of Democratic voters saying they would like to see her regain power, despite many in her own party saying she should step aside and let someone else take the leadership position.

The poll was conducted online among 1,992 registered voters between Aug. 10 and 12. There was a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
